Golf in Kohala Coast

The Kohala Coast is the name given to the resort corridor on the northwestern coast of the Big Island, a stretch of volcanic coastline between Kawaihae harbor and the Mauna Lani Resort where the combination of luxury resort properties—the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, the Fairmont Orchid, the Mauna Lani, and others—has created one of the most significant resort golf destinations in the Pacific. Mauna Kea Golf Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in 1964, established the template for Kohala Coast resort golf with its ocean-inlet third hole that remains one of the most photographed golf holes in the world. The Kohala Coast's dry, sunny climate—shielded from the trade winds by the volcanic peaks above—provides the most reliable golf weather on the Big Island.
