The Oakland County Parks system developed Lyon Oaks to serve the rapidly expanding residential population of Lyon Township and surrounding communities with a quality public course at the accessible price point that the parks system's mission requires. Lyon Oaks has been recognized as one of the better public county park courses in southeastern Michigan, with a layout that takes advantage of the natural terrain and wooded character of Oakland County parks land in the Lyon Township area's relatively open western edge. The county park setting provides a natural backdrop that private suburban course development rarely preserves in this part of an increasingly built-out county.
