Wawashkamo, whose name means "walks a crooked path" in Ojibwe, is a historic links-style course on the northern portion of the island in operation since 1898. Mackinac Island is a car-free island in the Straits of Mackinac in Mackinac County, accessible only by ferry or small plane, where horses and bicycles are the primary transportation. The island was a major fur trade center, a British and American military outpost, and became one of the Midwest's premier Victorian resort destinations in the late nineteenth century. The Grand Hotel, with its world's longest front porch, has been a landmark since 1887, and the island is one of Michigan's most visited destinations.
