The oldest golf course on record in California is Catalina Island Golf Course in Avalon, which first opened for play in 1892, a year verified against the operator's own site, a golf association and press coverage. The strongest competing claim on record is Victoria Club, but no source dates its opening before 1903, later than 1892, so it does not lead this list. The 50 oldest golf courses in California by recorded founding year, from Catalina Island Golf Course in Avalon in 1892 to 1923. They are drawn from the 604 California courses with a recorded founding year, 67% of the 903 listed here; the median founding year across that group is 1966. The rest carry no recorded year, so an older course may not appear on this list.
