Woodside is an incorporated town in San Mateo County on the San Francisco Peninsula, on the lower slopes of the Santa Cruz Mountains west of Redwood City and Menlo Park. The town has an equestrian and semi-rural residential character, with large-lot development, horse properties, and a prohibition on commercial development within its boundaries. San Mateo County's foothill communities on the western Peninsula, including Woodside, have maintained a rural residential character through strict land-use controls. The town's only commercial area is a small cluster of businesses at the main road intersection. Residents use Redwood City and Menlo Park for most commercial services. The surrounding Santa Cruz Mountains foothills include open space preserves, private forests, and equestrian trails through the residential properties.
