Cartersville is the county seat of Bartow County in northwest Georgia, a growing outer suburb of Atlanta about forty miles north along I-75 in the Ridge and Valley province. The city has significant history and natural attractions, including the Etowah Indian Mounds State Historic Site — one of the most significant Mississippian culture earthwork complexes in the Southeast — and a historic downtown along the Etowah River. Bartow County has experienced substantial residential growth as Atlanta's suburban fringe extended northward along I-75. Three golf courses serve the Cartersville area.
