Milledgeville was the capital of Georgia from 1807 to 1868, serving as the state seat through the Civil War period. The city was occupied by Sherman's troops in November 1864 during the March to the Sea, but unlike Atlanta it was largely spared destruction. Today Milledgeville is home to Georgia College and State University, a liberal arts university in the University System of Georgia, and the city's antebellum architecture and capital-era history remain central to its identity.
