Greensboro is the county seat of Greene County, the heart of the Lake Oconee resort region in middle Georgia. Lake Oconee, created by Georgia Power on the Oconee River, is one of the premier recreational lakes in the Southeast and has transformed Greene County into a major second-home, retirement, and golf destination. Reynolds Lake Oconee and other planned communities along the lake's shores have brought an extensive collection of golf courses and resort amenities to what was once a small agricultural county. Seven golf courses in and around Greensboro make it one of the most golf-dense communities in Georgia outside the Atlanta suburbs.
