Tunnel Hill is a small city in Catoosa County in northwest Georgia, named for the Western and Atlantic Railroad tunnel completed in 1850 that was a significant engineering feat. The tunnel and surrounding area saw action during the 1862 Great Locomotive Chase, when Union soldiers stole a Confederate locomotive known as the General and were pursued north toward Chattanooga. The Tunnel Hill Heritage Center preserves this Civil War railroad history. The community sits near Dalton in the Ridge and Valley country of northwest Georgia.
