Watkinsville is the county seat of Oconee County, a prosperous residential county west and south of Athens. Oconee County has grown substantially as a bedroom community for University of Georgia employees, Athens professionals, and families seeking lower housing costs and highly rated schools in a more suburban setting than Clarke County. The county is home to one of Georgia's top-ranked school systems and has some of the higher household incomes in the northeast Georgia region.
