Golf in American Falls

American Falls sits beside its namesake reservoir on the Snake River in Power County, at the center of Idaho's high-desert volcanic plain. The town relocated in the 1920s when the original falls—which rivaled Niagara in spectacle—were submerged by the expanded reservoir built to store irrigation water for the Snake River Plain's farms. What remains is a community defined by irrigation agriculture and the Snake River's engineered landscape, where reservoirs, canals, and basalt rimrock create an austere geography. The reservoir draws anglers and boaters through summer, while the surrounding plain supports potato and grain farming that has characterized Power County since the Bureau of Reclamation arrived a century ago.
