Golf in Idaho

Idaho's geography divides the state into five distinct golf regions, each shaped by elevation, climate, and the river systems that define the state's identity.

The Treasure Valley anchors Idaho's golf economy. Boise, the fastest-growing state capital in the country, and its surrounding cities—Nampa, Meridian, Eagle, Caldwell, Star, and Kuna—support the greatest concentration of courses in the state. Set at roughly 2,700 feet on the Snake River Plain where the Boise River emerges from the Boise National Forest, the valley enjoys hot summers, mild shoulder seasons, and Idaho's longest consistent golf season. Eight courses in Boise alone range from the City's municipal operations along the river greenbelt to private institutions in the foothills. The explosive suburban growth transforming Meridian and Eagle into nationally recognized boomtowns has added community-integrated courses designed for the planned neighborhoods reshaping the valley's northern and western edges.

The Sun Valley and Magic Valley corridor offers contrast. Twin Falls, perched at the Snake River Canyon rim where Shoshone Falls drops 212 feet into basalt, supports three courses serving the agricultural Magic Valley. North in the Wood River Valley, Ketchum and Sun Valley operate near 6,000 feet in the Sawtooth and Pioneer Mountain foothills, where a compressed summer season and resort-town scenery frame a golf experience inseparable from the lifestyle that has defined this corridor since 1936.

Eastern Idaho's Teton region produces some of the state's most scenically striking golf. In Driggs and Victor on the Teton Valley floor, courses open toward unobstructed Grand Teton views—the range rising sharply above 13,000 feet across the Wyoming border. Tributary in Driggs is a nationally recognized private layout whose mountain backdrop draws significant attention. Idaho Falls anchors the Snake River Plain's high-elevation golf with city-operated courses serving a region shaped by Idaho National Laboratory, agriculture, and the BYU-Idaho campus in Rexburg.

Northern Idaho's Panhandle built its golf identity around the lake and forest environment of the Coeur d'Alene region. The Coeur d'Alene Resort Golf Course—with its floating green accessible only by boat—is among the most recognized resort courses in the United States. Gozzer Ranch at Fernan Lake Village and The Golf Club at Black Rock at Rockford Bay represent the Pacific Northwest's premier private club development, where granite outcroppings, ponderosa pines, and lake views define courses drawing comparison to the best of Scottish coastal golf. Circling Raven at the Coeur d'Alene Casino demonstrates that the Panhandle's landscape supports exceptional golf beyond any single tier of exclusivity.

Remote Idaho rounds out the inventory: backcountry courses in Challis and Salmon set against the Lost River Range and Frank Church Wilderness; mountain resort layouts in McCall and Cascade; canyon-terrain golf in Lewiston at the state's lowest elevation; and Yellow Pine's informal course at the end of a gravel road deep in the Salmon River Mountains. Idaho's 91 courses span more than 5,500 feet of elevation and produce as much variety in conditions and scenery as any state in the American West.
