Golf in Smelterville

Smelterville is a Silver Valley community in Shoshone County, taking its name from the ore smelting operations that once defined the economy of this narrow canyon between Osburn and Kellogg. The South Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River flows through the valley, and the EPA's Coeur d'Alene Basin Superfund designation—one of the country's largest—addressed decades of mining waste in the river system. Galena Ridge Golf Course, named for the lead sulfide ore that made the valley wealthy, represents the recreational infrastructure that has grown as the industrial era recedes and outdoor recreation replaces extraction as the valley's economic driver and primary identity.
