Marshall is the county seat of Calhoun County in southwestern Michigan, a city of remarkable historic significance: it came within one vote of becoming Michigan's state capital in 1847, and the resulting sense of thwarted destiny seemed to galvanize the community to preserve itself beautifully—Marshall has one of the largest concentrations of nineteenth-century architecture on the National Register of Historic Places of any community in the Midwest. The Honolulu House, the National House Inn, and the downtown commercial district reflect what a Michigan county seat looked like before the twentieth century changed everything. Multiple golf courses serve the Marshall area's combination of county-seat residents and heritage tourism visitors.
