Golf in Anaconda

Anaconda's two golf courses tell the town's story from opposite directions. Anaconda Country Club has long provided the kind of community golf that sustained civic life through the smelter's boom years and the difficult decades that followed the closure. Old Works Golf Club, designed by Jack Nicklaus on the footprint of the actual copper smelter, is something rarer: a nationally significant course built on a Superfund site, where black slag sand fills every bunker as a deliberate nod to industrial history. Together they make Anaconda one of the more unexpectedly rewarding golf stops in Montana — a town that transformed environmental ruin into a destination.
