Lake Norman is a large reservoir on the Catawba River north of Charlotte, created by Cowan's Ford Dam in 1963. It is the largest reservoir in North Carolina, spanning parts of Mecklenburg, Lincoln, Catawba, and Iredell counties. The Lake Norman community encompasses numerous incorporated towns — Huntersville, Cornelius, and Davidson in Mecklenburg; Mooresville in Iredell; Denver in Lincoln — as well as unincorporated areas around the 520 miles of shoreline. The lake has become one of the Charlotte metro's most significant residential and recreational assets.
