Buffalo is the Johnson County seat, a community at the foot of the Bighorn Mountains on Clear Creek in northern Wyoming. The town's setting beneath the mountains and its access to the Cloud Peak Wilderness make it a natural base for outdoor recreation, including fishing in the mountain streams, hiking the Bighorn trails, and hunting in the national forest. Buffalo's history includes the Johnson County War of 1892, a violent confrontation between large cattlemen and small ranchers that defined Wyoming's cattle industry politics for generations. The Occidental Hotel, where Butch Cassidy reportedly stayed, is still operating. The Bozeman Trail, one of the most contested of the western emigrant routes, passed through Johnson County and is preserved in several historical markers and trail segments accessible from Buffalo and the surrounding countryside.
