Green Valley is an unincorporated retirement community in southern Pima County in the Santa Cruz River valley south of Tucson, one of the larger planned retirement communities in the American Southwest. The community was developed as an active adult community starting in the 1960s and has grown into a substantial residential area with extensive amenities, shopping, and golf facilities in the warm Sonoran Desert terrain at roughly 2,900 feet elevation. Green Valley's warm winters and mild spring and fall seasons make it a year-round retirement destination, with the Santa Rita Mountains providing a dramatic backdrop to the east. The community is south of Tucson along I-19 in the direction of the Mexican border at Nogales, with the open Sonoran Desert of southern Pima County surrounding the retirement community. Eight courses serve the Green Valley retirement community in the desert terrain of southern Pima County.
