Sun City is the first Del Webb retirement community in northwestern Maricopa County, developed starting in 1960 as one of the first large-scale planned retirement communities in the United States. The community set a pattern for active adult retirement living, followed in dozens of communities across the country, with an extensive network of recreation centers, golf courses, and community amenities serving the retirement-age population. Sun City has its own nonprofit district governance structure, with the HOOA managing the community's extensive recreation infrastructure. The flat Sonoran Desert terrain of northwestern Maricopa County was converted from agricultural land into a densely planned retirement community serving its aging membership.
