Sun City is the first Del Webb retirement community in northwestern Maricopa County, developed starting in 1960 as one of the first large-scale planned retirement communities in the United States. The community set a pattern for active adult retirement living, followed in dozens of communities across the country, with an extensive network of recreation centers, golf courses, and community amenities serving the retirement-age population. Sun City has its own nonprofit district governance structure, with the HOOA managing the community's extensive recreation infrastructure.
