Alameda is an incorporated city in Alameda County on a flat island in San Francisco Bay, connected to Oakland and the mainland by bridges and a tube. The city occupies Alameda Island and adjacent Bay Farm Island, with the estuary and bay defining its boundaries. The former Naval Air Station Alameda, which closed in 1996, occupies the western portion of the island and has been partially redeveloped as Alameda Point, a mixed-use area with housing, commercial, and park uses. The city has a residential character with a compact downtown on Park Street serving the island community. The city is accessible from Oakland via the Posey and Webster Street tubes, and the Alameda-Oakland ferry provides water transit to San Francisco. The flat island terrain and proximity to Oakland make Alameda a residential option for Bay Area workers.
