Calistoga is a city at the northern end of the Napa Valley in Napa County, where the valley narrows at the base of Mount St. Helena. The city is known for geothermal hot springs and mud baths that have drawn visitors for many decades and are a distinctive element of the local economy. The wine grape production in the Calistoga area benefits from a warm, dry climate at the valley's northern reach. State Route 29 runs through the city, as does the Silverado Trail on the eastern side of the valley. Calistoga has a well-developed downtown commercial district catering to wine country visitors and resort guests. The city marks the northern extent of Napa County's most densely planted wine region. Calistoga is roughly 90 miles north of San Francisco via US Highway 101 and local roads through the Napa Valley corridor.
