Indio is a city in Riverside County in the eastern Coachella Valley, the main commercial hub for the eastern valley communities. The city occupies the flat valley floor at roughly 50 feet below sea level in the lower valley, where the Salton Sea basin begins to the southeast. Riverside County's eastern Coachella Valley is centered on Indio as the main city, with date palm cultivation a long-standing agricultural activity in the surrounding desert. The Empire Polo Club north of the city hosts the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and the Stagecoach Country Music Festival. The city has a commercial corridor along Highway 111 and an annual National Date Festival. Interstate 10 provides the main east-west freeway.
