Hagerstown is the regional capital of western Maryland and the Washington County seat, a city of 40,000 in the Great Appalachian Valley between South Mountain and the Allegheny Front. Three golf facilities serve Hagerstown's market: Beaver Creek Country Club, the area's established private institution; Black Rock Golf Course, a county-operated recreational facility; and The Greens at Hamilton Run in the city's northwestern reaches. The Valley's strategic importance was proven at Antietam and South Mountain in September 1862—the bloodiest day in American military history was fought just south of the city.
