Plymouth is the county seat of Washington County, on the Roanoke River in the NC Tidewater Coastal Plain. The town sits near the mouth of the Roanoke River where it widens into the Albemarle Sound, in the flat cypress-and-pine terrain of northeastern North Carolina. Washington County is among the smaller and more rural counties of the Albemarle region, and Plymouth is the only significant city in the county. The CSS Albemarle, a Confederate ironclad, was sunk near Plymouth during a Civil War naval engagement, and a replica is displayed in the town.
