Roswell became internationally famous in July 1947 when debris found on a ranch northwest of the city generated a brief but indelible "flying disc" story from the local Army Air Field. The Roswell Incident has defined the city's popular identity ever since — it leans into extraterrestrial tourism with museums, festivals, and themed businesses. Beneath the alien branding, Roswell is a working Pecos Valley city of roughly 50,000 sustained by dairy farming, agriculture, and New Mexico Military Institute. Three golf courses serve the area: the NMMI course, the private Roswell Country Club, and Spring River Golf Course along the park corridor. At 3,600 feet, Roswell enjoys warmer winters than the north but consistent wind across the flat Pecos Valley terrain.
