Portsmouth is the northernmost of the three towns on Aquidneck Island, Rhode Island's largest island in Narragansett Bay. The town's character is defined by its agricultural interior, with farm stands and open fields coexisting alongside residential neighborhoods and the island's working harbor in the Portsmouth cove. The historic Portsmouth Abbey School and the sweeping views from Butts Hill Fort, a Revolutionary War earthwork, give the town depth beyond its suburban trappings. The Sakonnet River on the east and the West Passage of Narragansett Bay on the west ensure that water is a constant presence. Portsmouth is quieter than Newport but benefits from the same island geology and coastal orientation.
