San Carlos is the main community of the San Carlos Apache Nation in Gila County, in the rugged mountain and desert terrain of central Arizona. The San Carlos Apache Nation encompasses a large area of eastern Gila County including the San Carlos Reservoir, the Coolidge Dam on the Gila River, and extensive ranching and woodland terrain in the mountains of eastern Arizona. The Apache Stronghold Golf Club provides a community amenity on the tribal lands, and the tribe also operates the Apache Gold Casino Resort near Globe. The San Carlos area has a complex past tied to the Apache Nation's interactions with the U.S. government in the late nineteenth century.
