Nipton is a small community in the eastern Mojave Desert near the Nevada state line, in the far eastern corner of San Bernardino County. The settlement sits at roughly 2,600 feet in the Ivanpah Valley, with the New York Mountains rising to the north and open desert terrain extending in most directions. Nipton Road connects the settlement to Interstate 15 to the south, providing access toward Las Vegas and points east. The community has a small year-round population and has functioned as a rural waypoint for those crossing the Mojave. The surrounding terrain consists of creosote scrub, Joshua tree woodland, and the rugged volcanic ranges that define the eastern Mojave landscape. Mojave National Preserve, one of the larger federally managed areas in California, lies nearby and draws visitors for camping, hiking, and exploration of the desert interior. The rail corridor along the Union Pacific line passes through the broader valley south of the community.
