Savannah is the oldest city in Georgia, founded in 1733 as the first settlement of the Georgia Colony. The city's signature grid of 22 parklike squares linked by broad avenues remains largely intact and constitutes one of the most celebrated examples of urban planning in American history. Savannah's Historic District is among the largest in the United States and anchors a significant tourism economy. The Georgia Ports Authority operates one of the busiest container terminals on the East Coast at Garden City near Savannah, and the city is also home to the Savannah College of Art and Design, a major art and design university. Nine golf courses serve the Savannah-Chatham County area.
