Pilot Mountain is a small town in Surry County, in the NC Piedmont foothills near the Blue Ridge. The town takes its name from Pilot Mountain, the distinctive isolated monadnock that rises 2,421 feet above the surrounding piedmont and is preserved as Pilot Mountain State Park. The mountain was a landmark for Native American and colonial-era travelers in the piedmont foothills, and the state park around it is a popular destination for rock climbing, hiking, and scenic views across the piedmont. Pilot Mountain is on U.S. 52 between Winston-Salem and Mount Airy.
