Golf in Las Vegas

Las Vegas, New Mexico — not Nevada — is a San Miguel County city along the Gallinas River at roughly 6,400 feet, one of the most historically preserved communities in the state. The city developed as a major stop on the Santa Fe Trail and later as a railroad hub; the historic district contains more than 900 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Rough Riders from the 1898 Spanish-American War, many recruited from New Mexico by Theodore Roosevelt, mustered here before heading to Cuba. Gene Torres Golf Course provides recreational golf for a community whose Victorian and Territorial commercial architecture gives it a character quite different from the tourist-facing heritage of Santa Fe or Taos.
