Truth or Consequences acquired its unusual name in 1950 when the city voted to rename itself to win a promotion from Ralph Edwards's nationally broadcast radio quiz show. Previously known as Hot Springs, the community had leveraged its mineral springs for therapeutic tourism since the territorial period. Today the city of roughly 6,000 anchors Sierra County along the Rio Grande at about 4,200 feet, with Elephant Butte Reservoir nearby providing the most significant recreational draw in the region.
