Fort Stockton is the county seat of Pecos County in the Trans-Pecos of far west Texas, a community at the junction of I-10 and US 285 in the Chihuahuan Desert. The Comanche Springs that supplied water to the community for centuries are no longer flowing due to groundwater pumping, and the community now depends on wells for water in this arid high desert environment. Fort Stockton has a water source museum documenting the Comanche Springs and the fort that once protected travelers on the Comanche War Trail. Pecos County is one of the larger Texas counties by area, with vast ranch land, some petroleum production, and limited water. At roughly 3,000 feet elevation, the community has hot summers and a dry climate. One course serves the Fort Stockton community.
