Pecos is the county seat of Reeves County in the Trans-Pecos of far west Texas on the Pecos River, known for the claim of hosting the first rodeo in the United States in the 1880s. The city is the center of a cantaloup farming area that has used Pecos River water and deep well irrigation to produce the Pecos cantaloupe known for its sweetness in the arid climate. The petroleum industry is also significant in Reeves County, where production has included both conventional and unconventional resources. The community is at the junction of I-20 and US 285 in the Chihuahuan Desert, at roughly 2,600 feet elevation in this remote part of west Texas.
