McLean is a small community in Gray County in the eastern Texas Panhandle on the early alignment of US Route 66, one of the Panhandle towns that experienced Route 66 tourism in the mid-twentieth century and now is a quiet agricultural community in the Canadian River drainage. The Devil's Rope Museum in McLean documents the story of barbed wire, which transformed the Texas Panhandle's open range into fenced cattle ranches in the late nineteenth century. Gray County is in the eastern Panhandle, where the flat High Plains give way to the gently varied terrain of the Red River breaks and Canadian River valley. The community is on the I-40 corridor between Amarillo and Elk City, Oklahoma, in the sparsely populated eastern Panhandle. The region's economy is based on ranching, wheat farming, and some oil and gas production. One course serves the small McLean community in the eastern Panhandle terrain of Gray County.
