Pampa is the county seat of Gray County in the Texas Panhandle, an oil and agriculture community in the Canadian River valley area of the eastern Panhandle. The Canadian River valley in Gray County provides some topographic variation with its creek and valley terrain amid the otherwise flat High Plains, and the river's course through the Panhandle has cut breaks and draws that contrast with the surrounding plateau. Gray County has a mix of petroleum production and wheat and cattle agriculture. Pampa is on the US 60 corridor east of Amarillo and serves as the commercial hub for Gray County. The community was the childhood home of Woody Guthrie, who lived here in the 1930s Dust Bowl era. Two courses serve the Pampa community in the Panhandle terrain of the Canadian River drainage.
