Mineola is the county seat of Wood County in the East Texas transition zone, a community at the junction of the Cotton Belt Railroad lines that was a significant rail center in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Mineola Nature Preserve preserves bottomland hardwood forest along Dry Creek, providing nature access in the post oak and hardwood terrain of Wood County. The Sabine River and its tributaries define the landscape in Wood County, in the transition between the north Texas Blackland Prairie and the deeper East Texas Piney Woods. Wood County has a mix of agriculture, timber, and some tourism driven by nearby Lake Holbrook and other reservoirs. Mineola is approximately 70 miles east of Dallas along the US 80 and I-20 corridors. One course serves the Mineola community in the post oak and pine terrain of Wood County.
