Benson is a small city in Cochise County on I-10 in the San Pedro River valley of southeastern Arizona, at roughly 3,600 feet elevation in the high-desert grassland terrain of the borderlands. The community serves as a gateway to the Kartchner Caverns State Park, one of the most significant cave systems in the American Southwest, discovered in 1974 and located in the limestone hills west of Benson. The San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area preserves the riparian corridor of the San Pedro River north of Benson, one of the last free-flowing rivers in the desert Southwest and a significant migratory bird habitat. Benson occupies the agricultural flatlands of the San Pedro River valley in a region with a long cattle ranching heritage.
