Carefree is a small, upscale community in north Maricopa County at the edge of the Sonoran Desert preserve terrain above the main Phoenix Valley, adjacent to the Town of Cave Creek. The community has a distinctive planned character with a Spanish-Colonial downtown center, upscale shopping and dining, and large lot residential development in the boulder-strewn Sonoran Desert terrain. Carefree is known for its large sundial in the town center and its arts community, with galleries and studios serving the upscale residential population and visitors from the Scottsdale area to the south. The large granite boulders and saguaro cactus of the north Maricopa County terrain give Carefree a distinctive Sonoran Desert character.
