Bakersfield is the county seat of Kern County and the ninth-largest city in California, located at the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley. The city sits at roughly 400 feet elevation on the valley floor, near the point where the valley narrows between the Tehachapi Mountains and the Coast Range. Kern County's economy centers on oil production, agriculture, and related industries, with Bakersfield as the administrative and commercial hub for one of California's largest counties. Agriculture in the surrounding area includes citrus, grapes, cotton, and almonds, while oil fields in the western part of the county have made Kern a leading oil-producing area. State Route 99 runs through the city as the main north-south valley artery. Bakersfield is roughly 110 miles north of Los Angeles and maintains its own strong regional economy. The city has several distinct commercial and residential districts spread across the flat valley floor.
