Banning is a city in Riverside County in the San Gorgonio Pass, east of the San Bernardino Mountains along Interstate 10. The city sits at roughly 2,370 feet elevation in the pass between the San Bernardino and San Jacinto mountains. Riverside County's San Gorgonio Pass communities, including Banning and Beaumont, are in a zone of strong prevailing winds that have made the area suitable for wind energy generation, with turbine farms on the surrounding terrain. The local economy includes retail and services for the growing residential population, along with agriculture in the Banning Pass area. Interstate 10 provides the main highway connection west toward the Inland Empire and east toward the Coachella Valley and Palm Springs. The city has grown as a less expensive residential option within commuting distance of the Inland Empire.
