Fresno is the county seat of Fresno County and the fifth-largest city in California, located in the geographic center of the San Joaquin Valley. The city sits at roughly 330 feet elevation on the flat valley floor, surrounded by some of the most productive agricultural land in the country. Fresno County's agricultural output—including grapes, almonds, citrus, tomatoes, and other crops—represents billions of dollars annually and makes it one of the top agricultural counties in the United States. Fresno is the major metropolitan center of the Central Valley, providing retail, healthcare, education, entertainment, and government services for a wide region. The city is home to California State University, Fresno, and Fresno City College, among other institutions. State Route 99 is the main north-south artery, and State Route 41 connects northward toward Yosemite. Fresno is roughly 185 miles from both Los Angeles and Sacramento.
