Selma is a city in Fresno County in the San Joaquin Valley, south of Fresno on State Route 99. The city occupies flat valley terrain at roughly 300 feet elevation in the heart of the county's intensively farmed zone. Fresno County's San Joaquin Valley communities south of Fresno have economies centered on agricultural production and processing, particularly raisins, grapes, and stone fruit. Selma has a modest downtown and serves as a commercial hub for surrounding farms and smaller communities. State Route 99 provides the main north-south highway connection through the city. Raisin-grape production on vineyards surrounding the city has been a consistent part of the local economy, with the warm, dry summers providing conditions for drying grapes in the field. The city is positioned between Fresno to the north and Kingsburg to the south along the Highway 99 agricultural corridor.
