Hollister is the county seat of San Benito County, a city in a broad interior valley southeast of San Jose. The city sits in the Hollister Valley between the Gabilan Mountains and the Diablo Range, at a low elevation on the valley floor. San Benito County is one of California's smaller and more rural counties, with an economy centered on agriculture including garlic, vegetables, and row crops, along with cattle ranching on the surrounding hillsides. Hollister serves as the county's main commercial center and is its largest city by a wide margin. The Calaveras Fault runs through the area, making this one of the more seismically active regions in the state. US Highway 101 passes to the north, connecting Hollister to Salinas, Gilroy, and the broader Bay Area. The city has grown in recent decades as proximity to the Silicon Valley labor market has drawn new residents to this agricultural setting.
