Salinas is the county seat of Monterey County and the main commercial hub of the Salinas Valley, one of California's most productive agricultural regions. The city sits at roughly 55 feet elevation on the valley floor, near the Pacific coast. Monterey County's Salinas Valley produces substantial portions of the nation's supply of several crops, including lettuce, broccoli, spinach, and strawberries, grown in the rich valley soil with cool maritime air from Monterey Bay. Salinas has a substantial agricultural workforce, including a large Spanish-speaking immigrant population. The city is also connected to the author John Steinbeck, who was born in Salinas and set much of his writing in the surrounding region. Salinas is accessible from US Highway 101 and serves as the gateway to the Monterey Peninsula from the south.
