Santa Barbara is a city on the south coast of California in Santa Barbara County, between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez Mountains. The city serves as the county seat and the cultural and commercial center of the south coast region. The local economy includes tourism, education at UC Santa Barbara and Santa Barbara City College, healthcare, and light industry. Santa Barbara has a constrained land supply due to the narrow coastal plain between the mountains and the ocean, contributing to high housing values. The city has a consistent Spanish colonial revival building style in much of the downtown, a result of coordinated rebuilding after a 1925 earthquake. US Highway 101 passes along the coast through Santa Barbara, roughly 90 miles west of Los Angeles. The coast here faces south rather than west, giving Santa Barbara an unusual coastal orientation with relatively calm conditions along the city's bay.
