Watsonville is a city in Santa Cruz County in the Pajaro Valley, at the south end of Monterey Bay near the Santa Cruz-Monterey county line. The city occupies the flat agricultural floor of the Pajaro Valley, one of California's most productive strawberry-growing regions. Santa Cruz County's southern agriculture, centered on Watsonville, includes strawberries, raspberries, apples, and vegetables grown in the cool coastal climate. Watsonville serves as the commercial and service hub for the valley's agricultural workforce, which includes a substantial Spanish-speaking immigrant population. The city has a modest downtown and is connected to the broader region via State Route 1 along the coast and State Route 129 east toward Gilroy. The Pajaro River forms the southern boundary of the Pajaro Valley and the county line with Monterey County. Watsonville Airport provides air service to the area.
