Baird is the county seat of Callahan County in west-central Texas, a small Permian Basin-edge community on I-20 between Abilene and Sweetwater known as the Antique Capital of West Texas. The community has a downtown with antique shops in former commercial buildings along the old Texas Pacific Railway corridor. Callahan County is in the transition zone between the central Texas Cross Timbers and the open plains to the west, with cattle ranching and some oil production. The flat to gently varied terrain of Callahan County has mesquite grassland and native grasses at roughly 1,700 feet elevation. Baird functions as a small commercial stop on the I-20 corridor between Abilene and the Midland-Odessa Permian Basin area. One course serves the small Baird area in the terrain of Callahan County.
