Lamesa is the county seat of Dawson County on the Llano Estacado south of Lubbock, a cotton and grain farming community in the flat High Plains of the Texas South Plains. The city sits at roughly 2,900 feet elevation in the flat, semi-arid terrain where irrigation from the Ogallala Aquifer has allowed intensive cotton and grain production. Dawson County is an agricultural county with a relatively small population, and Lamesa is the primary commercial center for the county. The flat terrain of the South Plains extends unbroken in all directions, with a horizon dominated by agricultural fields and irrigation equipment. Lamesa is approximately 35 miles south of Lubbock along US 87, making it accessible to the regional center. Two courses serve the Lamesa community—a country club and a public facility—in the flat, semi-arid terrain of the South Plains.
