Midland is the county seat of Midland County and the corporate headquarters center for the Permian Basin oil industry, often characterized as a boom-and-bust economy tied directly to petroleum market values. The community has a prosperous business and professional class in strong oil markets and significant economic stress in downturns, creating a cyclical economy unlike most Texas cities of similar size. Midland is the childhood home of Presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, who lived here during the oil booms of the mid-twentieth century. The community is connected to Odessa by the I-20 corridor and the two cities function as a paired metro area.
